The University of Nantes has joined forces with several teaching, health and research establishments to create Nantes Université, a public higher education centre with a global structure. The main points of interest are the possible transversality of the courses and the research development opportunities.
This year, the University of Nantes has entered the top league of the major European and international universities with the birth of Nantes Université. This new university brings together several higher education and research centres from Atlantic France.
Becoming a major centre of higher education
Launched in 2017, this project, the first of its kind in France, aims to create a world-class public higher education and research institution in Nantes. A number of higher education establishments have joined forces to bring this project to fruition: the former University of Nantes, the Centrale Nantes engineering school, the School of Fine Arts, the School of Architecture, the University Hospital, a national research organisation specialising in health called INSERM and the Jules Verne Technological Research Institute.
In order to accomplish its mission of generating education, research and innovation, Nantes Université (42,600 students) is organised around four areas: humanities, social science, health and science & technology. From the beginning of the next academic year, students will have the opportunity to take double degrees and master’s degrees in Environmental Humanities which combines a mixture of social sciences, science and humanities. The aim is to open up new opportunities for students and meet the hybrid expectations of young people.
At the forefront of research for tomorrow’s industry and healthcare
French Prime Minister Jean Castex recently confirmed the “I-site” seal of excellence for Nantes Université because of its NExT (Nantes Excellence Trajectory) project. It is based on two major areas (tomorrow’s industry and healthcare) and will have a knock-on effect on all disciplines, forming particularly close ties with human and social sciences.
The founders of NExT aim to position Nantes Université in the top 300 universities worldwide and the top 100 European universities within 10 years.
