Ocean Technocampus: a joint research platform for the naval and marine renewables sectors

#Insights&co #Marinerenewableenergy

Created in 2015 and located in the heart of the Nantes urban area, in Bouguenais, the Ocean Technocampus is a shared technological research platform for companies and players in the naval sector and French marine renewable energies. It is a unique site that contributes to positioning Atlantic France as one of the most successful maritime territories in Europe and as an ideal place to set up your business!

Facing new maritime technological challenges

From basic research to pre-industrialisation, the Ocean Technocampus brings together industrial and academic players to promote both collaboration and the development of R&D projects. The objective? To find innovative solutions and improve the competitiveness of the marine and MRE sectors.

Although this platform is firmly positioned at the service of the maritime industry – in the broadest sense – a large part of its work is aimed at mastering the design of marine structures and the associated metalworking processes, (a major challenge for tomorrow’s French industry).

The Ocean Technocampus focuses its missions on 5 main actions:

  1. Developing new metal alloys, making them lighter and more efficient
  2. Testing new assembly methods and new welding processes, to build more resistant and competitive structures
  3. Using digital tools to optimise manufacturing, design differently and understand the ageing mechanisms of structures
  4. Fighting corrosion, by improving the resistance of materials in harsh environments
  5. Promoting the use of hydrogen in the marine environment, to decarbonise the maritime economy and promote a positive energy transition

A unique concentration of equipment and players in the maritime industry

Large industrial groups, SMEs, academic players or research centres: the Ocean Technocampus today welcomes around fifteen partners and a multidisciplinary pool of skills. Design, simulation, processes, assembly, control… The combination of all this know-how at the service of complex projects makes it possible to accelerate innovation and develop major industrial applications.

The Ocean Technocampus, with its atypical architecture and unique deep blue façade, which is reminiscent of the sea, is the showcase of excellence for the maritime industry in Atlantic France. The 17,000 sqm building houses collaborative spaces, offices, technological equipment and test halls.

While the Atlantic France regional council owns the site, technological coordination is entrusted to the EMC2 cluster, which is responsible in particular for coordinating projects and players. The co-location of local industrialists and researchers from the Grandes Ecoles encourages exchanges, partnerships and the emergence of new collaborative projects.

Naval Group, Centrale Nantes, CEA, Principia and WeAMEC, to name but a few, have chosen to set up teams there, which are dedicated to research and innovation. To date, the Ocean Technocampus welcomes 350 people who are working every day to meet the challenges of tomorrow’s industrial competitiveness.

Do you have a maritime project? Are you looking to develop new solutions for the naval and MRE sectors? Are you inspired to set up your business in a region that offers many conditions for achieving success?

We are at your disposal to answer all of your questions.

The network of Technocampuses in Atlantic France

Six Technocampuses have been created by the Atlantic France regional council and are managed by Solutions&co. Their aim is to move companies, which are from a sector of excellence, towards the industry of the future.

They bring together (on the same site) industries (large groups, SMEs or ETIs), private and public research universities or laboratories, and innovation support structures (competitiveness clusters or technological resource centres).
