A green hydrogen production project has been launched by the Port of Nantes Saint-Nazaire in Montoir-de-Bretagne (Atlantic France), and the startup Lhyfe has been chosen to take care of it. This endeavour, which is expected to transform the regional energy sector by 2028, will boost sustainable production and present new opportunities for international entrepreneurs in renewable energy innovation.
Lhyfe, a pioneer in green hydrogen production, has recently been chosen by the Port of Nantes Saint-Nazaire to be the company that will set up a significant hydrogen production facility in Montoir-de-Bretagne.
This initiative highlights Atlantic France’s commitment to sustainable energy, offering a unique opportunity for qualified entrepreneurs to engage with a region at the forefront of green innovation.
Balancing energy transition and economic growth
The decision to develop a renewable hydrogen production site in the industrial hub of Montoir-de-Bretagne reflects a strategic balance between fostering innovative energy solutions and nurturing economic growth.
Set to be operational by 2028, Lhyfe’s project aims to produce up to 85 tonnes of green hydrogen daily, utilising a 210 MW electrolysis capacity. This development aligns with the region’s broader Low-Carbon Industrial Zone (ZIBaC) initiative, which aims to transform the Loire Estuary into a leading clean energy hub.
Lhyfe leads the way in the field of green hydrogen
With several operational sites across Europe and more under development (in France, Germany, Sweden, and Spain), Lhyfe is solidifying its position as a key player in the renewable hydrogen market. The development of this project, which is awaiting necessary permits and various financial decisions, could be a decisive shift in reducing the carbon footprint of one of France’s major industrial areas.
It represents a step towards a greener future, aligning with the region’s commitment to sustainable energy practices and offering opportunities for business investment and innovation. Atlantic France is also fertile ground for international entrepreneurs looking to engage in sustainable energy projects.
There are many incentives for investing and developing new technologies in the field of green hydrogen/renewable energies, including access to networks of experts, financing opportunities, and a growing market that values sustainability and innovation.
This landscape makes Atlantic France an ideal destination for those wishing to pioneer the global energy transition and develop solutions that will shape the future of green energy.

A world first: success for Lhyfe’s offshore green hydrogen production tests
Lhyfe has marked a milestone in offshore green hydrogen production by returning its “Sealhyfe” pilot platform to Saint-Nazaire. Further developments are due to follow in Atlantic France, and also Europe. The “Hope” project in (offshore) Belgium will expand this innovation on a much larger scale. Backed by a €20 million European grant, it aims to harness sea water and wind energy for hydrogen production. Data from the pioneering phase in France will feed into the next stage, targeting a daily output of 4 tonnes of hydrogen by 2026, solidifying Lhyfe’s innovation lead and its growing team of nearly 200 employees.
